Public event: The UN Sustainable Development Goals: How do they frame social relations between the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)?:

For EU and LAC countries, the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement highlight the need to move towards a “progressive structural change centred on equality and environmental sustainability and based on social coalitions and compacts for governance at the global, regional and national levels” (CEPAL). The EU has long been committed to sustainable development and is again, with the Europe2020 strategy, at the forefront of sustainable development. The Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development committed itself to work towards a transformative vision of economic, social and environmental sustainability. Some LAC countries have begun to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their national strategies and development plans.

The SDGs strive for inclusive and cohesive societies that live in prosperity while respecting planetary boundaries. Having common goals, however, does not automatically imply having a clear idea of how to reach it. An intensified political dialogue is hence in the important role of identifying possible pathways to enhance this move towards progressive structural change.

In our discussion we want to explore (a) measures for enhanced EU-CELAC cooperation for the achievement of the SDGs, and (b) the potential of alternative socio-economic concepts and transition discourses from both regions (“Buen vivir”/ "Toda Una Vida", “Post-Extractivism”, “Degrowth”, etc.) to strengthen the bi-regional vision on sustainable development. How can bi-regional cooperation wisely link different visions of the future and diverse models for the achievement of the SDGs?

Simultaneously we also emphasize the relevance of SDGs for the social relations between EU and CELAC. At least ten of the SDGs are linked to the social dimension. Sustainable growth which leaves no one behind aspires to address structural inequalities, including socioeconomic, gender-based, ethnic, racial and territorial inequalities. How does bi-regional cooperation on SDGs shape the future of EU-CELAC social relations and more sustainable futures?
